The P4 though just for a basic server install would still be pretty snappy to learn on. I don't think he would wan't to virtualize the server in something like virtualbox.

Create a server VM in Virtualbox and set the NIC to Bridged. What I started doing was installing the desktop then load up VirtualBox. This can easily be done using both a Desktop version and a server version. To learn the linux command line I suggest this awesome site: В or go to and take their intro to Linux course. If you want to learn the desktop I would suggest staying away from Unity. If you really want to learn Linux for IT purposes then you stick with a server distro and the command line. If he truly wants to learn about Linux he needs to learn to troubleshoot it, and this issue with Ubuntu is a good way to start learning. Mint is a bit too newbie for him in my opinion. Be interested to see how the wifi adapter behaves in it.

I would go with the Linux Mint Cinnamon Desktop. I would try Linux Mint, it is even a better transition from Windows to Linux. But please remember to put it like you're talking to a total noob. It installs correctly (I think?) When it reboots after installation it connects to the wifi network. So switched over to Unbuntu Desktop v14.04. Installed Unbuntu Server v14.04 it installed correctly along with network connectivity. Machine parameters are socket 478 3.2ghz P4, 3gb memory, 500gb IDE HD, VGA, Ralink wifi network card. This post will be long winded as I'm going to give as much info as I can so please bear with me.
